# Data model editor

> Configure your IS Tools data model. Define tables, lists, fields, field groups, and diagram relationships. The first step in building an application.

[Application configuration](application_configuration.md) > Data model editor

The **Data model editor** is used by application administrators to configure the data model, i.e. record tables and how they relate to one another, and their corresponding data fields. This is used to define the structure of your data based on your business workflows and processes. Configuring your data model is the [first step](getting_started.md) when creating an application in IS Tools.

This form displays, from left to right:

- A tab to configure [Tables](tables.md).

- A tab to configure [Lists](lists.md).

- A tab to configure [Fields](fields.md) of the selected table.

> **Tip:**
>
> For a quick saving of your changes, use _Ctrl+Alt+s_ as a keyboard shortcut.

- _Groups_ tab, to optionally organize the fields of the selected table into separate groups.

- _Details_ tab, to see information related to the selected Table.

- _Diagram_ tab, to display [relations](tables.md#_relations_between_tables) between tables in a graphical way.
